Expert Packing For the Fashion Lover

Packing is an age-old problem for the modern fashion lover. Anticipating an upcoming trip is almost always exciting and fun, but a lot of anxiety comes with preparation and packing, especially if you are the type that really cares about bringing all the right stuff. Unfortunately, it is often that all the right stuff means way too much stuff to cram into a suitcase, and there's no bigger pain in the butt than lugging around an oversized suitcase full of anything you might possibly need while you travel. However, if this problem sounds a little too familiar to you, than you're in luck. Our fashion school experts have compiled a list of tips to help the fashion lover bring the essentials along, but leave the extra frills behind.

1. A little denim goes a long way. One of the heaviest items in a suitcase are denim jeans, and it is easy to psych yourself into thinking that you'll need a fresh pair of jeans for every day of your trip. In fact, jeans are rather durable and re-wearable, and you need to bring a lot less denim with you than you think. Try and average about one pair per every week of your trip. Also, if you're trying to make one pair of jeans last for a while, remember that the darker the wash, the less dirt shows up on the pants.

2. When trying to save space in a suitcase, leggings are a great way to go. Leggings are great because they are very versatile. You can wear them under a dress to keep your legs warm in the cold, or you can wear them instead of pants on a warmer day. They look great with heels, tucked into boots or casually paired with sneakers. They are also much easier to shove into a suitcase than slacks or jeans, because you can roll them up into a little ball!

3. If you're headed towards a colder climate, then you might be tempted to bring all of the heavy winter clothes in your closet to make sure you stay warm. However, this is not an efficient packing strategy. Bulky winter clothes take up a lot of weight and space in a suitcase, and to bring them all is rather unnecessary anyway. Pick ONE warm coat, and make it a good one. The rest of your warmth can come from layering other items. For added convenience, try to pick a coat in a neutral color, so it will match with any outfit you are wearing underneath it.

4. When packing for a trip, there is often the temptation to bring along items that have sat in the back of your closet, in the hopes that you'll finally wear them on your vacation. But the truth is, if you don't feel comfortable wearing it in your every day life, you probably won't feel comfortable wearing it while exploring new territories. Bottom line: If you don't wear it, don't bring it! Excess items might make you feel secure when you're packing, but during your actual travels they will only weigh you down.

Packing for a trip is always stressful for a fashion lover, but don't let the stress take away from the excitement of embarking on a new adventure! Whether or not you have a fashion school degree, you can probably manage to pack clothes you feel comfortable in, and that you know you'll definitely wear on your adventure!
