Any man who wishes to appear polished and just downright dashing needs to own a suit and a tie. There's really no two ways about it. When we think of James Bond at the bar, sipping his shaken martini, what is he wearing? A suit with a nice looking tie, of course. When we imagine Donald Trump sitting at his desk and saying "you're fired," he's in a suit and tie. And any woman who claims that she doesn't think a man looks hot in a suit, well she's just lying. So if you want to appear as well dressed as possible, I think it's clear what you need to do. As Barney Stinson would say, "suit up."
When selecting a suit, there are a few basic things to look for. These include color and fabric, jacket cut, jacket button style, pants style, and accessories.
Color and Fabric- Every man needs a classic black suit. But if black is not your thing, you can substitute a dark navy blue. If you are feeling a little more fashion forward, go for gray, or a dark suit with a distinct light pin stripe. When deciding what type of fabric to select, wool blends are usually the best choice. They are appropriate for nearly any occasion (as opposed to corduroy and linen) and de-wrinkle quickly.
Jacket Cut- The traditional American suit jacket is a bit loose and forgiving. It is important to make sure that the jacket sits smoothly against the top of the shoulder, and that there is no gapping or buckling in the back. For a slightly different style, look for a European cut jacket. These are slimmer and have higher arm holes. Many people find that these are actually more comfortable because there is less fabric. And if you want to dress to impress, you should not look like you are drowning in your jacket.
Jacket Button Style- One of the greatest debates with suits is two button versus three button. Two button suits are best if you have an athletic build and a large chest. It is not necessary to button a two button jacket. A three button jacket is more of a traditional look. If you do select a three button jacket, you should never, ever button the bottom button. If you button it at all, stick to just the middle button. On a three button suit, the middle button should hit you right about at your belly button.
Pants Style- Two important things to consider with suit pants are whether you want pleats, and whether you want a cuff. Flat front pants are a bit of a more modern, and more European, look. Choose a flat front if you want a trim look that sits close to your body. If you are very thin and want to add a little more contour to your lower body, choose pants with a pleat or two. (Just don't get out of hand a choose pants with multiple pleats. That's too much.) Cuff versus no cuff is strictly dependent on your personal preference. However, if you choose flat front pants, do not have them cuffed.
Accessories- No matter how cool you think it will be to wear a cape and carry a cane on your wedding day, don't do it. You've never seen Sean Connery wear a cape, have you? The point here is that suit accessories should enhance and compliment the look of your suit. They should not detract from it or make it look like you are wearing a costume. Appropriate suit accessories include a tie, belt, vest, cuff links, and/or tie accessories. If want to bump up your look a little bit, consider a particularly snazzy pair of shoes, or a colorful pocket square.
